On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and on the doorstep to the Lake District sits Hipping Hall, a restaurant with rooms. But not just any restaurant, a 3 AA rosette dining experience …
Situated just 2 miles from Kirkby Lonsdale, an historic market town that is included in the Domesday Book of 1086 and around a 30 minute drive from Windermere and Bowness or in the other direction Wensleydale and Wharfedale, you find Hipping hall, a luxurious but very relaxed award winning boutique country house hotel. Hipping Hall is steeped in history which dates back to the 15th century. An attractive grey brick house with creeper covered walls located surrounded by lawns, a pond plus – as I understand a band stand could be next to arrive! A stunning location for a Wedding.
We entered the house past the wisteria and through to the orangery, a light bright welcoming area – oh and I forgot to say ‘Dogs’ are welcome too – you just need to pre-book! We were shown to our room located just a 30-second walk from the main house within a recently renovated stable block. Part of a development of 5 stylish bedrooms each with its own terrace. The room was comfortable and modern with lovely toiletries, robes, and slippers. Something to note here, it is possible to have exclusive use of this area including a private dining and kitchen space – perfect for a family gathering, friends or maybe a Corporate ‘Away Day’.
And so to the dining experience…well I now know why it has won several awards! A stunning Dining Hall complete with inglenook fireplace and oak beams. The chef Oli Martin grew up in Lancashire and has subsequently worked in some of the top restaurants throughout the world – thankfully however he is now at Hipping hall. Using much local produce, Oli has created a choice of 5 or 8 course taster menus drawing on his passion and ability to bring together the most engaging flavours and textures.
From BBQ celeriac, roasted over coals with black garlic and garden lovage to Goosenargh Duck, with elderberries and roast parsnip – each course was an absolute delight and surprisingly not over facing just incredible. Matching wine packages are also available. As we glanced around the room, all of the guests appeared to be in total food heaven as they experienced each course which was wonderfully highlighted to them by the highly experienced and attentive waiting staff.
After dinner we retreated to the relaxing lounge areas and chatted with some of the other guests some of which were here for the first times whilst others were regular visitors. As one guest commented, “The perfect retreat to indulge and spoil yourself – unique in every way!”
We were not surprised to learn that Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan stayed here whilst filming an episode of The Trip – well why wouldn’t you? And finally, we headed to bed…
After a very comfortable nights sleep we enjoyed a delicious locally sourced breakfast before heading off to enjoy the immediate area of outstanding natural beauty.
We would thoroughly recommend Hipping Hall – and will certainly be returning.
